St. Cloud, MN - The RCTC Yellowjackets advanced through the opening weekend of the Region baseball tournament by going 2-1 on the opening weekend. Their wins over Ridgewater 9-1 and Riverland 15-5 were enough to earn the Jackets a spot in the four team double elimination North Plains District Tournament with a berth in the NJCAA College World Series on the line.
The Jackets opened the tournament with a nail-biter, falling to the Wood Ducks of Century College 7-6. The Jackets then faced NDSCS in the loser's bracket with hopes of keeping their season alive. RCTC fell 7-5 in that game to finish the season 29-17 and MCAC Southern Division Champions.
In the opening game against Century the Jackets trailed 6-0 after five innings, but started the comeback in the sixth. Rees Campanale and Augusto Mungarrieta scored on a Luios Rodriguez double to make the score 6-2. Rodriguez then scored on a Teagun Ahrens single to make it 6-3 after six. RCTC picked up another pair of runs in the seventh to make it 6-5. Jerry Santiago scored on a wild pitch, while Griffin Olson scored on a Campanale single. Century picked up a single run in the eight and lead 7-5 heading into the top of the ninth. Olson made things interesting with a solo homerun in the ninth, but that was all the Jackets could must in falling 7-6. Mungarrieta, Campanale, and Rodriguez each had a pair of hits, while Olson, Campnale, Ahrens, and Kyle Bechtel had an RBI.
The Jackets then fell 7-5 to NDSCS to conclude the season. St Cloud Community and Technical College advanced to the World Series with a 24-22 win over Century.
Post-season awards will be announced by the MCAC office.
